In a dramatic political development, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai from its ranks for a period of 30 years, citing “forged membership” and “attempts to destabilize the party.”
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alfa Mohammed, issued a statement on Sunday alleging that El-Rufai was never a registered member of the SDP but was orchestrating internal sabotage through clandestine connections.
The SDP accused the former governor of planting crisis agents within its structure, with the goal of hijacking the party ahead of the 2027 elections. It claimed El-Rufai was part of a wider plot by certain elements loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to infiltrate smaller parties in preparation for post-Tinubu succession battles.
El-Rufai has yet to respond to the allegations as of press time. Meanwhile, political observers say the move may be symbolic rather than procedural, given El-Rufai’s known alignment with the APC. Nonetheless, it underscores growing tension in Nigeria’s evolving opposition landscape as major and minor parties begin positioning for 2027.
