SENATE ADJOURNS FOR ANNUAL RECESS, TO RESUME SEPTEMBER

The Nigerian Senate has adjourned plenary for its annual legislative recess and will reconvene on September 23, 2025. The motion for adjournment was moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele during Thursday’s sitting in Abuja and adopted without opposition.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio clarified that while plenary activities are suspended, legislative responsibilities remain active. “You are not stopping your legislative functions because that’s what your people elected you to do,” he reminded the lawmakers.
Akpabio urged senators to utilise the recess for oversight, particularly through visits to correctional facilities and inspection of federal projects. Committees on Diaspora Affairs, Reparations, and Interior Matters were specifically tasked with intensified field engagement.
He assured that a special day will be set aside to consider all committee reports upon resumption. On a somber note, Akpabio announced the passing of Professor Janet Plang, wife of Senator Diket Plang, and directed all senators to convene for her funeral in Plateau State.
The Senate Leader, in wrapping up the session, praised senators’ dedication throughout the calendar and moved that all other legislative business be deferred.
