The Nigerian Senate has issued a formal response rejecting claims that a recent court judgment compels the reinstatement of suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The clarification follows a letter from her legal team citing Justice Binta Nyako’s July 4 ruling as grounds for her immediate recall.
Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu, however, maintained that the judgment contained “advisory observations” rather than enforceable directives. He emphasized that the Senate retains constitutional authority over disciplinary matters under Section 60 of the 1999 Constitution.
While acknowledging the court’s commentary, the Senate insisted no declaratory or injunctive orders were made to nullify its internal disciplinary process. It promised to further review the ruling and communicate its decision officially, cautioning against hasty interpretations or legal misrepresentations.
