The Senate has passed legislation to establish a Mines Rangers Service, a specialised agency charged with protecting mining assets, safeguarding workers and preventing illegal extraction in mineral-rich zones. The bill outlines the agency’s mandate, operational structures and frameworks for collaboration with security agencies and mining regulators.
Supporters of the bill argued that a dedicated ranger force will reduce criminality around mining sites, protect community rights and ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards. The law also includes provisions for training, community liaison and codes of conduct to ensure rangers operate professionally and respect human rights.
The measure will now proceed to reconciliation and onward to executive consideration. Stakeholders in the mining sector signalled support but asked for clear guidelines on funding, jurisdictional limits and mechanisms for community participation.
