The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has reversed its prior plan and scheduled the screening of newly-appointed Service Chiefs for 5th Wednesday next week, signalling a rapid legislative response to the President’s request. A Senate Leader disclosed the decision following deliberations with upper-chamber leadership.
According to the announcement, the screening process will be conducted under the Committee of the Whole rather than through standing defence committees, which are yet to be constituted. This approach allows all senators to participate directly in the vetting of the nominees.
The decision comes after earlier indications that the confirmation process could be delayed due to procedural bottlenecks. Many observers view the Senate’s expedited scheduling as a signal of the urgency attached to resetting Nigeria’s military command in light of persistent security challenges.
