Senate steps down Bill Proposing 10-Year Jail Term for Abortion Offences

The Senate has set aside for further consideration a bill that proposed a 10-year jail term for abortion offences, opting to step it down after extended debate and calls for broader stakeholder consultations. Senators cited the sensitive nature of the subject and the need to reconcile legal, medical and human-rights perspectives before concluding legislative action.

During floor debate, members called for input from medical associations, women’s groups, legal experts and faith-based organisations to ensure any future law balances public-health imperatives, women’s rights and societal values. The decision to step down the bill means no immediate changes will be enacted while consultations proceed.

Parliamentary committees were tasked with convening hearings and preparing a comprehensive report recommending an approach that protects women’s health while clarifying criminal liabilities where appropriate.
