Shocking School Conditions Exposed in Edo

Pupils at Ughieda Primary School in Etsako West LGA, Edo State, are forced to sit on bare floors in crumbling classrooms—despite billions of Naira allocated to education under the EdoBEST programme.

Civic tech platform Monitng exposed the deplorable state of the school, questioning the fate of funds meant for education under former governor Godwin Obaseki.

“Despite billions of Naira allocated through the EdoBEST Programme, what we found was heartbreaking: dilapidated classrooms, broken ceilings, leaking roofs, and a lack of basic furniture for students and teachers,” Monitng stated.

The platform noted that Edo State received a $75 million World Bank loan in 2020 and allocated ₦20.8 billion to education in 2021, yet many schools remain in ruins.

The headmaster of Ughieda Primary School has pleaded for government intervention, calling for immediate repairs to prevent further decline.

Governor Monday Okpebholo and Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa are now under pressure to fix the school and prove that Edo’s education funds are being used effectively.
