Sudan Army announces withdrawal from El Fasher; UN warns of risk of RSF Atrocities

The Sudanese Army has declared a formal withdrawal from El Fasher as part of ongoing conflict de-escalation efforts, raising concerns from UN agencies about a security vacuum and possible human rights abuses by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The UN issued an urgent statement warning that the RSF, known for wielding brutal paramilitary tactics, could exploit the abandonment to target civilians, especially displaced communities and minority groups.

Humanitarian groups have already reported spikes in violence and mass displacement in North Darfur, where access for aid agencies is increasingly constrained. The peace process remains fragile amid competing military factions and complicated external mediation.

Observers note that the army’s move may aim to consolidate forces elsewhere or avoid being drawn into protracted urban conflict, but the potential consequences for civilian safety demand rigorous oversight and international engagement.
