The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has publicly praised Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State for his leadership style, particularly the trust and autonomy he extends to his deputy, Alhaji Idris Mohammed Gobir. The Sultan made the comments during a Sallah homage event, lauding the governor for demonstrating a rare example of collaborative governance.
The Sultan noted that the practice of allowing the deputy to effectively run state affairs in the governor’s absence was both commendable and necessary for deepening democratic norms. “Leadership is not a one-man affair,” he said. “It requires trust, delegation, and collective responsibility.”
He advised other state governors to emulate this model, stating that empowering capable deputies ensures continuity, effective governance, and eliminates political frictions often associated with succession politics or internal rivalry.
Alhaji Abubakar also used the occasion to call on the government to maintain open channels of communication with the public to prevent misinformation and rumors, especially concerning issues like insecurity. He acknowledged the joint efforts of federal and state governments in combating insecurity but emphasized that more robust and sustainable action is needed to safeguard lives and foster development.
Deputy Governor Gobir, in his remarks, thanked the Sultan for his consistent support and highlighted that the administration had operated seamlessly during the governor’s absences, due to the trust placed in him. He stressed that security remains a top priority for Governor Aliyu and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to building a peaceful and prosperous Sokoto.
