Super Eagles receive national honours, housing and land documents ahead of AFCON campaign

Members of Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad have formally received national honours certificates along with housing and land allocation documents promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in recognition of their performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The presentation ceremony took place on December 22, 2025, at the team’s base in Fez, Morocco, just days before Nigeria’s opening match in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. It fulfils a pledge made by President Tinubu after Nigeria finished as runners-up at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire.

The honours include members of the Order of the Niger (MON) for most players, with exceptional recognitions such as the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for veterans like Victor Osimhen and Ahmed Musa, who had previously held MON awards. Team captain William Troost-Ekong was conferred with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) for his standout performance as Player of the Tournament in 2023.

Alongside the honours, title documents for land and housing allocations in major cities including Abuja and Lagos were issued to the players, fulfilling long-standing promises from the presidency. Authorities confirmed that certificates of occupancy have been processed, underscoring the government’s commitment to athlete welfare and structured reward systems for national sporting achievements.

Senior officials at the event included the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, and lawmakers from the Senate and House sports committees. Other national teams, including the Super Falcons and men’s basketball squad D’Tigers, were also noted to have received similar processing for their reward packages.

The honours and allocations provide a morale boost for the Super Eagles as they pursue success in AFCON 2025, where expectations are high for Nigeria to make a strong continental showing.
