President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Thursday, led a momentous Democracy Day commemoration at the joint session of the National Assembly by decorating top federal lawmakers with national honours previously conferred. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas received the GCON title, while Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Barau and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu were decorated with CFR.
In a sweeping recognition of Nigeria’s democratic history, Tinubu conferred posthumous honours on late democracy activists including Kudirat Abiola (CFR), Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (GCFR), and Prof. Humphrey Nwosu (CON). Also honoured were environmentalist Ken Saro-Wiwa (CON) and the eight other members of the Ogoni Nine. Tinubu granted them a full presidential pardon, signalling national healing and reconciliation.
Nigerian journalism icons such as Prof. Wole Soyinka (GCON), Sam Amuka Pemu (CON), Kunle Ajibade (OON), Dapo Olorunyomi (OON), and Dare Babarinsa (CON) were also among the honourees, reflecting the administration’s recognition of the press as a pillar of democracy.
