TINUBU TO ADDRESS NATION FROM NASS CHAMBERS AS DEMOCRACY DAY PROGRAMME UNFOLDS

The Federal Government has unveiled the official line-up of events for the 2025 Democracy Day celebration, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 12. A statement signed by Abdulhakeem Adeoye on behalf of the Director of Information and Public Relations outlined the programme, which includes a national broadcast, a joint session of the National Assembly, and a public lecture.
The day will begin at 7:00 a.m. with a nationwide broadcast by President Bola Tinubu, in which he is expected to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, highlight ongoing policy reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, and recommit to upholding democratic values.
At 12 noon, the president is scheduled to address a joint sitting of the National Assembly in what could become an institutionalised tradition if ongoing legislative proposals are passed. The address is anticipated to set the tone for future State of the Nation communications.
Later in the day, at 4:00 p.m., a public lecture will be held at the State House Conference Centre with the theme “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.” Media coverage for the event will be coordinated by State House correspondents, and participating broadcast stations were required to submit their personnel details by Wednesday afternoon for access clearance.
Unlike previous years, this year’s Democracy Day celebration will not feature a ceremonial parade. Nevertheless, the scheduled engagements are designed to underscore the growing emphasis on institutional reform and governance consolidation under President Tinubu’s administration.
This year marks the second Democracy Day celebration under the current government and arrives at a time of intense national conversation on constitutional change, electoral integrity, and political accountability.
