TINUBU TO INAUGURATE RENOVATED NATIONAL ARTS THEATRE TOMORROW

The President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is scheduled to inaugurate the renovated National Arts Theatre tomorrow, October 1st. The facility, located in Lagos, has recently undergone extensive renovation under a public-private partnership, with funding support from the Bankers’ Committee.

The renovation project included comprehensive upgrades to major sections of the theatre: the main auditorium, banquet hall, exhibition spaces, actors’ changing rooms, and support facilities such as toilets and lobbies. Roof repairs and exterior refurbishments also form part of the completed work. The project is intended both to preserve the cultural heritage of the theatre and to boost economic activity through the creative industry.

Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has highlighted that the renovation will generate jobs and give renewed life to a landmark cultural symbol. The Minister said the Theatre’s reopening will serve both as a cultural revival and as a stimulus for domestic tourism, arts, and performances.

While the inauguration marks a milestone, stakeholders note that after re-opening the facility, management and ongoing programming will be key to its sustainability. Maintenance, regular performances, and usage by creative professionals are seen as necessary to ensure the theatre does not fall back into disuse.
