Nigeria’s sprint hurdler and world record holder, Tobi Amusan, is set to begin her eighth consecutive Diamond League season in style, as organisers have confirmed Doha, Qatar, as the opening leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League.
The announcement, made on Monday October 27th by the World Athletics body, marks Amusan’s return to one of her favourite tracks, where she has previously recorded top finishes in the women’s 100m hurdles. The 26-year-old athlete is expected to headline a strong field of global competitors as she seeks to defend her dominance in the Diamond League series and solidify her preparations for the 2026 World Athletics Championships.
Amusan, who has maintained top form since reclaiming her African Games title earlier this year, said she was focused on consistency and recovery. “Every season comes with new motivation and fresh goals,” she told reporters. “I want to stay healthy, run clean, and inspire young African athletes that longevity is possible with discipline.”
The Doha meet will officially launch the 2026 Diamond League circuit, which spans 15 host cities across four continents. Sports analysts say Amusan’s performance in Doha will set the tone for her medal ambitions in next year’s major championships.
Her participation underscores Nigeria’s growing visibility on the global athletics scene and reaffirms her status as one of the continent’s most decorated track athletes of all time.
