Trump, XI hold talks in bid to ease trade tensions between U.S. and China

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met face-to-face on Thursday october 30th  in an attempt to stabilise deteriorating trade relations between the world’s two largest economies. The talks, held in Beijing, marked the first high-level meeting between both leaders in over a year.

According to official statements, discussions focused on reviving trade cooperation, restoring communication channels, and addressing disputes over technology, tariffs, and investment restrictions. Both delegations included senior trade and finance officials.

President Xi said China was ready to “strengthen dialogue on an equal basis” and promote fair competition, while Trump described the meeting as “productive and candid,” adding that both sides were committed to “a balanced and mutually beneficial relationship.”

The renewed engagement follows months of friction over semiconductor exports, data regulation, and access to critical minerals. In recent weeks, both governments have exchanged measures aimed at reducing tensions, including the partial rollback of certain tariffs and renewed business visas for American companies in China.

Markets reacted positively to the meeting, with global stock indices recording moderate gains amid expectations of reduced trade uncertainty. While no formal agreement was signed, officials said follow-up meetings would continue in Washington before the year’s end.
