Mali Government Revokes 90 Mining Permits in Compliance Crackdown

The Malian government has withdrawn more than 90 mining permits from local and foreign operators following a sweeping review of compliance with environmental and social standards. The decision forms part of an ongoing reform drive aimed at tightening control over the country’s mineral wealth.

In a statement, the Ministry of Mines said the affected companies failed to meet obligations related to exploration timelines, environmental management, and community compensation schemes. Authorities said the revoked permits would be reallocated through a transparent process prioritising firms with “proven capacity and compliance records.”

Mining contributes nearly 30 percent of Mali’s export revenue, with gold accounting for most of the output. Officials said the new measures were intended to prevent speculative licensing and ensure that revenues directly benefit local communities.

Teams from the national geological service have been deployed to inspect remaining concessions, and further audits are expected in 2026. The government added that environmental violations, particularly illegal dumping and land degradation, would attract stiff penalties under a forthcoming mining code.

The announcement sparked mixed reactions from operators, some of whom confirmed receipt of revocation notices. The government maintained that the decision was final, adding that it would support legitimate investors committed to ethical and sustainable mining practices.
