Ex-Akwa Ibom Assembly Speaker Resigns as Governor Eno’s Adviser

A former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Aniekan Uko, has resigned from his position as Special Adviser on Legislative Affairs to Umo Eno.

Uko’s resignation marks a notable political development in Akwa Ibom State, particularly amid growing political activity ahead of future elections and speculation over the ambitions of several key figures in the state.

Resignation Confirmed in Letter to Governor
In a resignation letter addressed to Governor Umo Eno, Uko stated that he was stepping down from his advisory role in order to pursue personal political aspirations and future opportunities aligned with his goals.

Part of the letter read:

“Please accept this formal notice of my resignation as Honorary Special Adviser on Legislative Affairs, as I embark on a new chapter to pursue future opportunities that align with my goals.”

He also expressed appreciation to the governor for the opportunity to serve in the administration.

“I am grateful for the experience, and I appreciate the chance to have served. However, due to evolving circumstances, I find it necessary to step down in order to focus on my aspiration.”

The former Speaker added that he remained supportive of the governor and his administration despite his decision to resign.

“I remain hopeful that I will continue to support your administration in other capacities.”

Gratitude and Goodwill Message
Uko concluded his letter by wishing the governor and the state continued success.
“I wish you and the state continuous growth, success, and best wishes for a brighter future, while I extend sincere thanks for the trust and support extended to me during my tenure.”

The tone of the letter suggests an amicable departure rather than a political fallout, although the timing has naturally generated fresh interest in Akwa Ibom’s evolving political landscape.

Speculation Over Next Political Move
There are growing indications that Uko resigned to pursue a higher legislative office at the national level, particularly a seat in the House of Representatives, often referred to as the Green Chamber.

Though no official declaration has been made, political observers in the state believe the former Speaker may be preparing to contest in the next electoral cycle.

His political profile, legislative experience, and local influence are seen as assets should he decide to seek federal office.

Who Is Aniekan Uko?
Aniekan Uko is a former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and represented Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency during his time in the legislature.

As Speaker, he was one of the most prominent political figures in the state legislature and played a significant role in lawmaking and state governance.

Following his tenure in the Assembly, he was appointed Special Adviser on Legislative Affairs to Governor Umo Eno, where he served as a liaison between the executive arm and legislative stakeholders.

Governor Eno’s Earlier Warning to Appointees
Uko’s resignation comes months after Governor Umo Eno reportedly warned political appointees in his administration against leaving their positions to contest elective offices.

The governor had made it clear that members of his cabinet were expected to remain focused on governance rather than early political ambitions.

His remarks were widely interpreted as an attempt to maintain stability within government and avoid distractions ahead of the next election cycle.

Automatic Ticket Controversy
Governor Eno had also disclosed that current members of the State and National Assembly were to be granted automatic return tickets.

According to the governor, the arrangement formed part of an understanding reached before several political figures aligned with him during the move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on June 6, 2025.

The announcement generated significant reactions across the state’s political space.
Supporters argued that rewarding loyal lawmakers with return tickets would strengthen party unity and continuity.

However, critics strongly opposed the idea.

Protest by Aspirants
Some aggrieved aspirants protested the plan, describing it as undemocratic and harmful to internal party competition.

They argued that granting automatic tickets would:

  • Undermine democratic principles
  • Ignore zoning arrangements
  • Deny voters genuine choices
  • Shut out new aspirants
  • Concentrate power in a few hands

Following the backlash, the reported automatic ticket arrangement was later shelved.

That reversal was seen as a victory for party members advocating open competition.

Political Implications of Uko’s Exit
Uko’s resignation may signal the beginning of a new round of political realignments in Akwa Ibom State.

As the next election cycle approaches, more officeholders and political actors may begin repositioning themselves for legislative, executive, or party leadership roles.

His exit also highlights the tension that often exists between governance responsibilities and political ambition.

Many appointees across Nigeria eventually resign from government roles when preparing to contest elections, particularly where neutrality or full-time political mobilisation is required.
