Turaki emerges PDP National Chairman amid court battles

Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has emerged as the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following a contentious national convention held on Saturday at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Adamasingba, Ibadan.

The convention went ahead despite competing court orders and pressure from opposing interests seeking to stop the exercise over unresolved leadership disputes.

Some litigants had argued that the party lacked the legal basis to conduct the convention, but PDP leaders insisted they had obtained valid judicial clearance to proceed.

Turaki’s emergence followed days of intense negotiations, withdrawals and strategic realignments among governors, National Assembly members, former presidential aspirants and key party elders.

Several aspirants reportedly stepped down in favour of Turaki, who was widely presented as a consensus stabiliser ahead of the next general election cycle.

A former Minister of Special Duties and 2019 presidential aspirant, Turaki pledged in his acceptance speech to rebuild, reconcile and reposition the PDP.

Analysts say Turaki now faces the difficult task of reuniting aggrieved factions, restoring internal discipline and crafting a winning strategy for 2027.
