The United States military has confirmed the deployment of a small contingent of U.S. forces to Nigeria as part of an ongoing security partnership focused on counterterrorism and regional stability. The deployment, according to U.S. defence officials, is aimed at supporting Nigeria’s efforts to combat violent extremist groups and does not involve large-scale combat operations.
U.S. officials said the forces are being deployed in an advisory and support capacity, with responsibilities expected to include intelligence sharing, operational planning assistance, and coordination with Nigerian security agencies. Details regarding the exact number of personnel, their base of operations, and the length of the deployment have not been made public, with U.S. authorities citing operational security concerns.
The cooperation is largely directed at addressing the continued threat posed by extremist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). These groups have carried out years of attacks across northeastern Nigeria, targeting civilians, military formations, humanitarian workers, and critical infrastructure.
