The United Nations (UN), speaking through its Secretary-General’s office, has condemned the attempted coup in the Republic of Benin declaring full support for the legitimate government and for ECOWAS’s efforts to restore constitutional order.
A spokesperson for the Secretary-General said the UN unequivocally condemns any attempt to undermine democratic governance in Benin, citing the danger such actions pose not only to Benin, but to regional stability as a whole.
The UN also confirmed that its Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel is engaging with Beninese authorities, regional bodies, and international partners to support peace, stability, and the rule of law.
The backing from the UN comes days after troops from ECOWAS-member states, including Nigeria, intervened to help quash the coup attempt, a move that has been defended as necessary to uphold democratic institutions and prevent further instability in a region already racked by military takeovers.
