WOMEN STILL UNDERREPRESENTED IN NIGERIA’S LEADERSHIP — ACTIVISTS

Advocates for gender equality have raised alarm that Nigeria is operating at half of its potential due to the chronic underrepresentation of women in leadership positions. The call came during a stakeholders’ meeting on women’s political participation, where speakers insisted that no nation can develop effectively while sidelining half of its population.

Despite global advocacy and Nigeria’s ratification of key international gender equality treaties, women currently occupy less than 8% of elective positions nationwide. Participants at the meeting stressed that cultural, financial, and systemic barriers continue to exclude women from politics and high-level decision-making.

Activists urged the government, political parties, and civil society to adopt stronger affirmative action policies, including gender quotas in elective offices and appointments. They also highlighted the importance of mentorship for young women to bridge generational gaps.

The push for greater women’s inclusion has gained traction ahead of the 2027 elections, with campaigners warning that Nigeria cannot sustain development while marginalizing female voices.
