Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, marked Democracy Day with sweeping clemency at the Maiduguri Maximum Custodial Centre. Acting on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, Zulum granted state and partial pardons to 66 inmates, reduced several sentences, and commuted death penalties to life imprisonment.
The governor also launched plans to overhaul inmate rehabilitation by strengthening literacy, numeracy, and digital skills training. Donations of 300 bags of rice, five cows, 50 jerrycans of cooking oil, and N20,000 in cash to each of the 1,280 inmates further underscored the administration’s humanitarian commitment.
Correctional authorities described the governor’s gesture as unprecedented, with the inmates’ representative expressing heartfelt appreciation for extending the dividends of governance to society’s most forgotten.
