Zamfara Introduces Uterine Prolapse Surgeries In Expanded Medical Outreach

Zamfara State has expanded its Special Modified Medical Outreach Programme with the introduction of uterine prolapse surgeries, a development aimed at improving access to specialised women’s healthcare across rural communities.

The procedure is being carried out under the leadership of Professor Isma’il Mungadi, who is currently overseeing a new phase of the programme targeting about 350 additional patients.

Uterine prolapse is a condition where the womb descends into or outside the vaginal canal due to weakened pelvic muscles, often linked to multiple childbirths, and is especially common in underserved rural areas.

Health officials say the inclusion of the surgery marks a major upgrade in the state’s medical outreach, ensuring women with complex gynaecological conditions can receive treatment that was previously unavailable locally.

Since its launch in August 2023, the programme has operated across all 14 local government areas of Zamfara State, delivering nearly 4,800 surgical procedures for more than 4,000 patients.

The outreach has also provided free treatment for chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, while addressing other medical cases including cataracts, hernias, vesicovaginal fistula, and rare congenital disorders.

Officials report an exceptionally high success rate of about 99.98 percent, describing the programme as one of the most impactful health interventions in the state’s recent history.

The state government says the latest expansion reflects its commitment to closing healthcare gaps, reducing medical tourism, and improving maternal health outcomes, particularly for women in remote and vulnerable communities.

Authorities add that the initiative will continue to prioritise life-changing surgeries and preventive care as part of broader efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare system.
