Major Breakthrough: Troops Rescue 27 Kidnap Victims, Repel Terrorists in Sokoto and Zamfara

  1. Nigerian troops have rescued 27 kidnapped victims and thwarted fresh abduction attempts during a series of coordinated military operations across Sokoto and Zamfara states.

The successful operations, carried out between July 20 and 21 by troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, also led to the recovery of livestock and three motorcycles abandoned by fleeing suspects.

According to a statement by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force (North West), Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, troops stationed at the Forward Operating Bases in Shagari and Sifawa acted on credible intelligence about the movement of suspected terrorists in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The soldiers raided Wanke and Kaura communities, where they encountered the armed suspects. Following an intense exchange of gunfire, the attackers reportedly fled the area.

During the operation, the troops rescued six kidnapped victims and recovered livestock as well as two motorcycles. The victims were later reunited with their families.

In a separate operation the same day, troops working alongside the State Security Community Guard Corps rescued 10 kidnap victims who had escaped from their captors. The victims—comprising men, women, and children—were found wandering in the bush near Badanma Community in Rabah Local Government Area before being safely reunited with their families.

On July 21, troops attached to Combat Team 12 responded to an emergency alert after suspected terrorists reportedly blocked the Gummi–Sokoto Road in an attempt to abduct commuters.

The military engaged the attackers, forcing them to retreat and successfully rescuing 11 additional victims. One motorcycle was also recovered during the operation.

Commending the troops, Lt. Col. Danja praised their professionalism, bravery, and swift response, noting that the successful missions reflect the military’s ongoing commitment to tackling terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping in the North-West.

He also acknowledged the vital role played by residents who provided timely intelligence, urging communities to continue cooperating with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities to help sustain the fight against criminal groups.
