First Lady Remi Tinubu Pledges ₦2 Billion to Boost Abia’s Famous Akwete Weaving Industry

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has announced a ₦2 billion donation to support the growth and preservation of Akwete fabric, one of the country’s oldest and most celebrated handwoven textiles.

The donation was unveiled on Tuesday during her visit to Aba, Abia State, where she joined efforts to promote the historic Akwete weaving tradition and encourage greater investment in Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

According to the First Lady, the fund will be used to develop the Akwete production hub, create more employment opportunities for local artisans, and strengthen the state’s economy through increased textile production.

Speaking at the event, Tinubu praised the craftsmanship behind Akwete fabric, describing it as a priceless cultural treasure that reflects the identity and history of the Igbo people.

She noted that the fabric is traditionally woven by women using vertical looms and crafted from cotton, raffia, and silk, making it renowned for its vibrant colours and distinctive geometric patterns.

“I am in awe of the richness of what Akwete fabric represents,” she said, stressing the importance of preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

The First Lady urged young Nigerians to embrace traditional clothing and cultural values, saying that indigenous fashion helps preserve the nation’s identity and connects younger generations with their roots.

She also commended the women of Akwete for keeping the centuries-old weaving tradition alive despite the challenges they face.

Addressing community members, Tinubu declared that it was time for Akwete fabric to gain wider national recognition and called on influential sons and daughters of the South-East to support efforts to preserve and promote the craft.

To demonstrate her commitment, she announced a ₦2 billion donation to the Abia State Government to support the expansion of the Akwete weaving project.

In a lighter moment, the First Lady told Governor Alex Otti that if President Bola Tinubu wins a second term in the 2027 presidential election, she would proudly wear an Akwete-made wrapper and blouse during the inauguration ceremony.

The investment is expected to enhance local textile production, empower women weavers, create jobs, and preserve one of Nigeria’s most treasured cultural traditions for future generations.
