Tegbe Commissions Transformer Projects Across Four Lagos Transmission Substations

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has commissioned major transformer projects across four transmission substations in Lagos State, adding significant capacity to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) network.

The projects, commissioned on August 17 and 18, include seven 132/33kV transformers and one 330/132/33kV transformer across the Apapa, Ijora, Alausa and Lekki transmission substations.

The interventions comprise two 60MVA transformers at Apapa, two 100MVA transformers at Ijora, a 100MVA transformer at Alausa, two 60MVA transformers at Lekki and a 300MVA transformer at Lekki.

According to the Ministry of Power, the projects have added 540MVA of transformer capacity at the 132kV level, with the ability to wheel about 432MW. An additional 300MVA has also been added at the 330kV level, providing capacity to transmit about 240MW across the Lagos transmission network.

Speaking during the commissioning, Tegbe said the projects were targeted investments designed to support businesses, industries and communities.

“They represent targeted investments in capacity, capacity for businesses to grow, capacity for industries to produce, and capacity for communities to prosper,” he said.

Lekki Gets Major Transmission Boost

The Lekki and Alausa projects were commissioned on Tuesday.

At Lekki, the project includes a 300MVA, 330/132/33kV transformer and two 60MVA, 132/33kV transformers.

The intervention effectively doubled the capacity of the Lekki 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation, with capacity at the 330/132kV level increasing from 300MVA to 600MVA.

At the 132/33kV level, capacity also increased from 120MVA to 240MVA.

The project delivered nine new 33kV feeders to improve bulk power delivery to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) network.

Tegbe said the additional capacity would improve the reliability and availability of electricity supplied to industries, businesses and households in Lekki and surrounding areas.

He stressed that strengthening electricity infrastructure was essential to supporting investment and economic growth in the rapidly developing Lekki corridor.

Alausa Capacity Increased

At the Alausa Transmission Substation, Tegbe commissioned a new 100MVA, 132/33kV transformer.

The project increased the substation’s total transformation capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA, equivalent to approximately 164MW.

It also increased the bulk power available to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) by 80MW for onward distribution to consumers.

Tegbe described the investment as part of the Federal Government’s strategy to strengthen transmission infrastructure in areas with significant economic activity.

Apapa, Ijora Projects Commissioned

The commissioning began on Monday with a 2x60MVA Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at the Apapa Transmission Substation.

The project was delivered by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under its Official Development Assistance programme.

It includes two 60MVA transformers, new 132kV and 33kV GIS switchgear, a new control building, modern protection and control systems, substation automation systems and SCADA infrastructure.

The facility is expected to improve monitoring and operation of the transmission substation while increasing bulk power availability in the Apapa area by approximately 96MW.

At the Ijora Transmission Substation, two existing 30MVA transformers were replaced with two modern 100MVA, 132/33kV transformers.

The upgrade increased the substation’s total installed capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA, equivalent to approximately 184MW, providing an additional 112MW of transmission capacity.

The project is expected to improve electricity supply to Ijora, Costain, Oyingbo, Customs and surrounding communities.

Tegbe said the projects form part of a broader nationwide effort to address transmission constraints and strengthen Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.

He said the government would continue to identify transmission bottlenecks, expand substations, replace ageing equipment and prioritise electricity investments in major industrial and commercial corridors.

The minister added that the Federal Government’s broader objective is to make reliable electricity a foundation for industrial competitiveness, investment and economic growth.
