Barcelona midfielder Rodri has apologised to Valencia and its players after his off-camera comments describing the struggling La Liga side as “weak” sparked criticism from fans and the Spanish media.
The 2025 Ballon d’Or winner made the remarks during Barcelona’s 5-0 victory over Valencia at Mestalla, where he was filmed telling teammate Pau Cubarsí that Valencia had struggled to get beyond the halfway line.
“They’re really weak. They haven’t got past the halfway line,” Rodri was heard saying after being substituted.
The comment quickly generated controversy, with the Spain international accused of disrespecting Valencia and the club’s status in Spanish football.
Rodri, however, has now apologised to Valencia captain José Gayà and the club’s squad, insisting that his words were an expression of surprise at their performance rather than an attempt to mock or belittle the team.
“I apologised to my friend and colleague José Gayà and to the entire squad as well,” Rodri said.
Rodri Clarifies Controversial Remark
The Barcelona midfielder said he had no intention of disrespecting Valencia and argued that the conversation had been private.
According to Rodri, his reaction came from surprise at how Valencia were performing during the match.
He also expressed sympathy for the club’s current struggles, saying he hoped Valencia could return to their former level because of their importance to Spanish football.
Rodri further urged people to avoid taking private conversations out of context, maintaining that there was no intention to ridicule the opposition.
Valencia Struggling at Bottom
Valencia have endured a difficult period in recent seasons and narrowly avoided relegation last season, with crucial goals from Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq helping them retain their top-flight status.
Their problems have continued into the new campaign. The club remain winless after four matches and sit at the bottom of the La Liga table with just one point.
Barcelona’s emphatic victory at Mestalla has added to the pressure surrounding Valencia, while Rodri’s comments have provided another talking point following the heavy defeat.
The midfielder’s apology is now expected to draw a line under the controversy as both clubs continue their respective campaigns.
