The Chairman of Media Trust Group, Mallam Kabiru Yusuf, has called on journalists to uphold fairness, accountability and editorial independence in their reporting, stressing the importance of accuracy and responsible journalism.
Yusuf made the call on Thursday during the official unveiling of Media Trust Group’s converged newsroom, where he described journalism as “history in a hurry.”
He acknowledged that mistakes were inevitable in the profession but said media organisations must take responsibility by correcting inaccuracies and offering apologies when necessary.
According to him, Media Trust provides opportunities for individuals and organisations to respond to reports through its right-of-reply column, reinforcing its commitment to accountability and balanced reporting.
Yusuf emphasised that fairness requires journalists to listen to different perspectives, including those of people they disagree with or consider opponents.
He also acknowledged the challenges of maintaining professional standards amid attempts to influence media coverage, insisting that external pressure must not compromise journalists’ independence.
The Media Trust chairman admitted that the organisation was not perfect but said it remained committed to meeting the standards expected of a responsible media institution.
He urged journalists to remain conscious of their responsibility to the public by reporting accurately, asking critical questions and correcting errors whenever they occur.
