Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has directed all outgoing local government chairmen to hand over to their respective Heads of Local Government Administration following a Supreme Court ruling that nullified their elections.
On Friday,1st March the apex court dismissed the 23 chairmen and ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to withhold local government allocations to the state. The ruling overturned a Court of Appeal decision that had upheld the elections.
In a statewide broadcast on Sunday 2nd March, Fubara urged residents to remain calm, stating that while they may disagree with the ruling, it must be respected. He assured that fresh elections would be conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) in due course.
