OYO ASSEMBLY BACKS ROTATIONAL OBAS’ COUNCIL LEADERSHIP

The Oyo State House of Assembly has passed a revised amendment to the Chieftaincy Law, resolving that the chairmanship of the Council of Obas and Chiefs will rotate among the Alaafin of Oyo, Olubadan of Ibadanland, and Soun of Ogbomosoland—abandoning an earlier push to make the Alaafin a permanent chair.
The decision, based on recommendations from the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, sparked protest. Two lawmakers—Hon. Olorunpoto Rahman and Hon. Gbenga Oyekola—staged a walkout, accusing the committee of sidelining stakeholders and historical precedence.
Rahman criticized the lack of public hearings, alleging political motives. He insisted the Alaafin’s paramount status deserved permanent chairmanship, in line with tradition and history.
