TINUBU UNVEILS LANDMARK TAX REFORM BILLS

In a bold policy shift aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s complicated and regressive tax regime, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared his intent to sign into law four sweeping tax reform bills passed by the National Assembly. The announcement came on Thursday, June 26, via a personal statement by the president, framing the reform as the most people-centered tax overhaul in decades.
The proposed laws include the Nigeria Tax Bill (Fair Taxation), the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill. Collectively, they aim to simplify tax collection, reduce administrative redundancies, and make the system more equitable—particularly for low-income earners and small businesses long burdened by inconsistent and inefficient taxation.
“Our tax system has punished the vulnerable and rewarded inefficiency. That era ends today,” Tinubu declared. He promised that the new regime would not only unify fragmented tax laws but also energize the economy by ensuring that taxation does not strangle productivity.
The President thanked the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee, the National Assembly, and state governments for their collaboration, stating that the move marked the beginning of a broader transformation agenda. “We are not merely enacting laws—we are redefining our social contract,” he asserted.
