The House of Representatives has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, following his historic election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council. The election took place during the 145th and 146th Council Sessions in Brussels, Belgium.
The WCO Council, composed of the Heads of 186 Customs administrations from across the globe, stands as the highest decision-making body of the Organisation. The Chairperson’s role is both strategic and diplomatic, requiring the ability to build consensus, harmonise diverse perspectives, and steer the global Customs community toward shared objectives.
The House praised this significant achievement as a moment of national pride, reflecting the international recognition of the transformative reforms and enhanced professionalism within the Nigeria Customs Service under Adeniyi’s leadership.
Speaking on behalf of the House, the Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, Rep. Leke Abejide, commended Adeniyi’s exemplary leadership. He expressed confidence in the CGC’s ability to excel in this global capacity, stating: “The election of CGC Adewale Adeniyi is a significant milestone for Nigeria and Africa at large. It reflects his unwavering dedication to reform, transparency, and innovation in the Nigeria Customs Service. We are confident he will bring the same level of professionalism and integrity to this new responsibility at the helm of the WCO Council.”
The House reaffirmed its support for the Nigeria Customs Service and pledged to continue strengthening legislative oversight that promotes institutional excellence and fosters international cooperation.
