Benin City — The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) has sealed the premises of Market Square (Sunday Foods) in Benin City over alleged unpaid taxes totaling about ₦27,005,117.97.
An audit spanning the years 2018 to 2023 uncovered several tax obligations, including Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) and Withholding Tax liabilities. Despite being notified, Sunday Foods did not contest the assessment within the legal notice period, prompting enforcement action.
The revenue authority declared the assessment final and enforceable, saying the company failed to clear its debt even after reminders. The closure is reported to remain until full payment is confirmed.
The Executive Chairman of EIRS, Barrister Oladele Bankole-Balogun, emphasized that tax compliance is critical for commercial legitimacy. He urged businesses to settle liabilities to avoid disruptions. EIRS noted that such enforcement is part of a renewed effort to broaden the tax base and improve state revenues to fund infrastructure and public services.
