The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has died after collapsing at a public event, sources said on Friday. The senior officer reportedly became unwell during the ceremony and was immediately attended to by on-site medical personnel, but was later confirmed dead. Details of the exact cause of death have not been released pending an official medical examination and the completion of formal notifications to next of kin.
Following the incident, the NSCDC issued a brief statement expressing sorrow and describing the development as a “profound loss” to the service and the nation. The statement said arrangements are being made for an official funeral in line with security agency protocols and that an internal review into the circumstances surrounding the collapse has begun. Acting leadership within the corps has assumed operational responsibilities to ensure continuity of command.
Political leaders, security chiefs and civil society figures have sent condolences to the bereaved family and called for calm as the corps manages the transition. The Federal Government has also been reported to be monitoring the situation closely and is expected to make a formal pronouncement once medical and administrative processes conclude.
