NIGERIAN BASKETBALL PREMIER LEAGUE SET TO RETURN, SAYS NBBF

The Nigerian Basketball Premier League is set for a long-awaited return as the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) has confirmed plans to relaunch the competition once ongoing sponsorship negotiations are concluded.

NBBF President Musa Kida disclosed the update during the National Sports Festival in Benin City, stressing that discussions with potential partners are in advanced stages and a deal is expected soon.

“The federation has been working tirelessly to secure the right sponsors that can ensure the sustainability of the Premier League. Once we conclude these talks, the league will bounce back, bigger and better,” Kida said.

He added that state basketball associations and clubs should begin preparations for the upcoming Division One and Division Two Championships, which will feed directly into the elite league.

The Nigerian Basketball Premier League, once the flagship of domestic basketball, has faced years of interruptions due to funding and administrative disputes. Its return is expected to re-energise the sport locally and provide a critical platform for young talents eyeing international exposure.

Analysts note that a functioning league would also help strengthen Nigeria’s national teams, the D’Tigers and D’Tigress, by providing a steady pipeline of players competing at a high level.
