Wike criticizes defying Building Regulations, urges Enforcement

Former Rivers State Governor and prominent federal figure Nyesom Wike has condemned recent instances of defiance against building regulations in the Police Estate and urged authorities to enforce planning and construction laws strictly.

Speaking at an event in Port Harcourt, Wike said adherence to approved building plans and safety codes is non-negotiable, warning that violations endanger lives and undermine urban planning efforts. He called for prompt demolition or rectification of illegal structures and demanded transparent action from relevant agencies.

Wike urged homeowners, developers and estate managers to cooperate with building authorities and the Fire Service to ensure compliance, and he suggested improved public sensitisation on planning regulations to prevent inadvertent breaches. He also asked security agencies to collaborate with planning authorities to sanction errant contractors and public officers who facilitate irregular developments.

Urban planners and resident associations welcomed the call, noting that enforcement will protect property values and public safety, but they also urged that enforcement should be even-handed and follow due process.
