The federal government has officially granted Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo Akwa Ibom State the status of an international airport, paving the way for it to receive and process international passengers.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during a meeting in Abuja with the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno. Keyamo said the upgrade reflects the fact that the airport already meets global infrastructure standards. including a runway over three kilometres long, a functional Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility, and modern terminals capable of handling large aircraft.
Under the new designation, a joint federal-state effort will begin to transition the airport from its prior local-only status to full international operations. A multi-agency team that includes customs, airport management authorities and meteorological, immigration and security agencies will assess and certify all necessary regulatory and operational requirements before flights begin.
Governor Eno welcomed the approval, describing it as a milestone that could boost tourism, trade, international business, and global connectivity for Akwa Ibom State. He disclosed plans to construct a dedicated cargo terminal and residential housing for airport staff with the aim of having the first international flight out of Uyo by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
Aviation-sector watchers say the upgrade could be transformative for the region, strengthening Uyo’s appeal as an economic and business hub, reducing travel-time friction for residents, and opening opportunities for direct foreign travel and cargo services. Still, some analysts caution that success will depend on consistent airline interest, passenger demand, and good port/neighbourhood infrastructure otherwise the airport could face challenges similar to other state-built airports which struggle with viability.
