Nigerian Governors hail Tinubu over “strategic rollback” of Benin Republic coup attempt

The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has publicly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for Nigeria’s swift military intervention that helped foil a recent coup attempt in Benin Republic calling the action a vital “strategic rollback” for regional stability.

In a statement released on Monday December 8th, the NGF noted that had the coup succeeded, the ripple effects could have seriously threatened Nigeria’s own security, given shared borders and existing insurgent risks in nearby regions.

According to the governors, Tinubu’s decision to accede to the Beninese government’s request for support deploying air and ground forces under the mandate of regional democratic protocols reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to defending constitutional governance beyond its borders.

They argued that the move not only preserved democracy in Benin but also safeguarded Nigeria’s national interests, protecting trade corridors, border states, and preventing potential spill-over of conflict from the Sahel or militant-infested zones adjoining Benin.

The NGF concluded that democracy remains the best guarantee for peace, stability, and development in West Africa and credited Tinubu and the Nigerian Armed Forces for acting decisively and responsibly when regional peace was under threat.
