Akpabio denies mocking Trump over Nigeria comments, describes viral post as “fabricated”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has disowned a viral social media post allegedly quoting him as mocking U.S. President Donald Trump over his recent threat of military intervention in Nigeria, describing it as “false, mischievous, and reckless.”

A statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, in Abuja, said the post originated from a platform called Rant HQ, which falsely attributed derogatory comments to the Senate President.

The fake post quoted Akpabio as saying, “The killing is taking place in Nigeria, not in USA. Trump should focus on the US. Nigerians are not complaining.”

Eyiboh categorically dismissed the post as “a total falsehood,” noting that Akpabio never made any such comment—“not publicly, privately, in writing, or in conversation.”

“It is a desperate attempt to incite misunderstanding between Senator Akpabio and President Trump, as well as between Nigeria and its partners,” Eyiboh stated.

He added that Akpabio holds President Trump “in high regard as a historic leader,” and would never issue statements on U.S. domestic matters or Nigeria’s foreign policy, which are reserved for the executive branch.

The statement described the viral post as a “clear act of digital recklessness” and urged Nigerians to disregard it entirely.

“Freedom of expression is not freedom to lie,” Eyiboh warned, calling for responsible communication amid the ongoing diplomatic tension sparked by Trump’s controversial remarks on Nigeria.
