Akwa Ibom Government releases ₦60 billion for massive infrastructure development

The Akwa Ibom State Government has released ₦60 billion to fast-track ongoing and new infrastructure projects across the state — a move Governor Umo Eno described as “a decisive push to consolidate development gains and enhance economic mobility.”

The announcement, made through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, covers road construction, urban renewal, rural electrification, and drainage works in flood-prone areas. It marks one of the state’s largest single capital disbursements in recent years, reflecting the administration’s determination to expand infrastructure under its ARISE Agenda — an acronym for Agriculture, Rural Development, Infrastructure, Security, and Education.

Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Nsikan Linus, said the funds would be deployed in phases, prioritising projects nearing completion and those that address critical public needs. “We are investing in roads that connect communities, electricity projects that power industries, and water systems that serve growing populations. The goal is not just to spend, but to deliver,” he noted.

Among the major projects earmarked for acceleration are the Uyo-Etinan dual carriageway expansion, the Eket Urban Renewal Scheme, and the Ikot Ekpene-Itu Road reconstruction — a long-delayed arterial route linking Akwa Ibom to neighbouring Cross River State. Rural electrification in Ikono, Oruk Anam, and Mkpat Enin Local Government Areas has also been scheduled for inclusion in the first funding batch.

Governor Umo Eno, in a statement from the Government House, said the ₦60 billion investment is “not just about physical development but about dignity and opportunity for every Akwa Ibomite.” He reaffirmed his administration’s zero-tolerance for contract inflation and urged contractors to adhere strictly to deadlines and quality standards.

“We are setting new benchmarks for transparency and performance monitoring. Our goal is to deliver projects that outlive politics and truly serve the people,” the governor added.

The Akwa Ibom Chamber of Commerce and industry stakeholders have lauded the initiative, saying it will stimulate the local economy, create jobs, and attract investors. Economists, however, cautioned that fiscal discipline and community participation are essential to ensure long-term sustainability.

As the projects roll out, civil society groups are urging the government to publish project details and contractors’ names, in line with open governance principles, to guarantee accountability in the ₦60 billion infrastructure programme.
