Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have demanded a ransom of $300,000(approximately 480 million Naira) for the release of a former Vice Chairman of a Local Government Area in Borno State and one other individual. The victims were reportedly abducted last week during an ambush on a vehicle traveling along a volatile highway in the northern part of the state.
Family sources and local security officials confirmed on Monday, January 12, 2026, that the kidnappers established contact with the victims’ relatives to convey their demands. The abduction of the high-profile former official has caused significant anxiety in the region, highlighting the persistent threat posed by remnants of the insurgent group despite ongoing military operations.
Security agencies, including the military and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), have reportedly launched a search and rescue operation in the general area where the ambush occurred. However, the insurgents have warned against any military intervention, threatening the lives of the captives if their demands are not met. The Borno State government has not issued an official statement regarding the ransom demand, maintaining its long-standing policy of not negotiating with terrorists.
