The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the apex socio-cultural body of the Niger Delta region, has appealed for “mutual forbearance” and urgent restraint following the renewed impeachment attempt against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. In a statement issued on Monday, January 12, 2026, the forum warned that the escalating political friction threatens the fragile peace and economic stability of the entire South-South region.
The call, led by PANDEF National Chairman Ambassador Godknows Igali, emphasized that the constant political turmoil in Rivers is a “distraction” that the state cannot afford. PANDEF urged both the executive and the legislature to adhere to the rule of law and explore internal mechanisms for conflict resolution rather than resorting to actions that could trigger widespread civil unrest. The forum expressed concern that the crisis, which stems from the rift between the Governor and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has already polarized the state and slowed down governance.
PANDEF also called on President Bola Tinubu to take a more definitive role in mediating the dispute to ensure it does not degenerate further. The elders’ intervention mirrors similar calls from other regional bodies who fear that Port Harcourt, a critical hub for Nigeria’s oil industry, could become a flashpoint for violence if the legal and political battles are not de-escalated immediately.
