CCB urges political office holders to submit asset declarations or face sanctions

The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has issued a stern warning to political office holders and public officers in Nigeria to submit their mandatory asset declaration forms or risk facing sanctions, including possible prosecution and removal from office. The reminder, issued in Jigawa State, underscores the constitutional requirement that public officials disclose their assets to promote transparency and accountability in governance.

Under Nigeria’s legal framework, political appointees and career public servants must declare their assets and liabilities to the CCB upon assuming office, during tenure and upon exit. Failure to comply can attract penalties, including disqualification from holding public office and other legal consequences designed to deter corruption and unethical conduct.

The agency’s latest directive comes amid ongoing efforts to enforce compliance with the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act and restore public confidence in the integrity of Nigeria’s political leadership. The move signals that the CCB is intensifying oversight of ethical obligations for all tiers of government, reinforcing that asset transparency is a non-negotiable requirement for public service.
