China has reaffirmed its “unwavering support” for Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amid rising diplomatic tensions following President Donald Trump’s recent warning of possible U.S. military action in response to alleged Christian persecution.
In a statement issued through its embassy in Abuja, Beijing emphasized its principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations, stating that Nigeria remains “a valued partner and strategic friend.” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, reiterated that Beijing “opposes any form of external pressure, coercion, or threat undermining Nigeria’s independence or stability.”
The statement also highlighted China’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Nigeria in infrastructure, defence, and economic sectors under the Belt and Road Initiative. Political analysts interpret the declaration as both a diplomatic show of solidarity and a signal of Beijing’s growing interest in strengthening its strategic foothold in Africa amid shifting global alliances.
