CHINA UNVEILS SWEEPING CONTROLS ON RARE EARTH EXPORTS AHEAD OF TRUMP TALKS

China has announced sweeping new restrictions on the export of rare earth minerals, a move analysts say could reshape the global technology and defense industries. The timing comes just days before scheduled trade talks with former U.S. President Donald Trump, raising speculation that Beijing is using rare earths as a bargaining tool.
The measures include stricter export licensing, expanded quotas, and more stringent environmental audits for companies handling rare earth mining and processing. Rare earths — 17 critical elements — are indispensable for manufacturing electric vehicles, smartphones, wind turbines, and advanced weapons systems.
China currently controls more than 70 percent of global production, giving it enormous leverage. By tightening supply, Beijing risks sending shockwaves through industries already grappling with supply chain vulnerabilities.
Western officials have voiced alarm, warning that the controls could trigger price spikes and shortages. The European Union has already signaled plans to accelerate investment in alternative supply chains, while the United States is seeking partnerships with Australia and Canada to reduce dependence on China.
Chinese officials defended the policy as a measure to curb environmental damage and ensure “sustainable development,” but experts say the geopolitical timing is no coincidence.
