The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has given the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, until November 5, 2025, to open his defence in the terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.
Justice Binta Nyako issued the order on Tuesday after Kanu’s lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, failed to produce the defendant in court or present a formal application explaining his absence.
The court noted that despite repeated assurances from Kanu’s legal team, the defendant had yet to begin his defence months after the Supreme Court ordered that his trial resume.
Justice Nyako stated firmly that “this matter has lingered long enough. The defence must open its case on the next adjourned date or risk closure of its right to do so.”
The judge also reminded counsel that the court would not entertain unnecessary delays, especially after ruling that Kanu must stand trial for alleged acts of terrorism, incitement, and unlawful possession of firearms.
Earlier in the session, counsel to the prosecution, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), expressed frustration at what he described as “a deliberate attempt to frustrate proceedings,” urging the court to enforce its orders decisively.
Kanu, who has been in custody since his re-arrest in Kenya and extradition to Nigeria in 2021, has pleaded not guilty to all counts. His lawyers have consistently argued that his trial violates international law and the principle of fair hearing.
Supporters of the IPOB leader have continued to stage peaceful demonstrations calling for his release, while security agencies have maintained heightened presence around the court premises during hearings.
The case has been adjourned to November 5, 2025, for Kanu to open his defence.
