EDO STATE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL approves multiple ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS across the STATE

The Edo State Executive Council has approved a suite of new road construction projects spanning the state’s three senatorial districts, part of an expanding infrastructure agenda designed to improve transport links, drive commerce and boost economic activity for residents and businesses.

Council members endorsed the construction of priority road networks that will link urban, peri‑urban and rural communities, enhance conditions for trade and movement, and reduce travel times. The approved initiatives are part of a broader vision to tackle infrastructure deficits and raise standards for mobility and logistics throughout Edo State.

Among the key projects earmarked for implementation are plans for a flyover bridge at Adesuwa Road, which will ease congestion and improve connectivity in one of Benin City’s busiest corridors. In Oredo Local Government Area, the government has authorised the Evbhukhu‑Sapele Road construction, to include a surface and underground drainage system, addressing historical flooding and transit bottlenecks.

The Exco’s approvals also extend to Eguaolor‑Iguomo‑Uvbenisi‑Oza Road with a spur to Ohe community in Uhunwonde LGA, and the Okpagha‑Amufi Road with several key spurs in Uhunwonde/Ikpoba‑Okha, which are aimed at improving access for trade and local activities. Internal roads in Ogbeghe and Old Sapele Road (Benin City) are slated for reconstruction to enhance urban mobility, while Uhie Road off Sapele Road, and internal routes in Ugieda village (Etsako West LGA) are also on the development schedule.

In Esan, the approval includes the construction of a single carriageway of the Ekpoma‑Uromi‑Ubiaja Road, a strategic rural link expected to facilitate agricultural and commercial flow across local communities.

State officials say that these road expansions are integral to the Okpebholo administration’s broader infrastructure rollout, which includes over 250 km of ongoing projects such as Technical College Road and its adjoining links, flood control works, and multiple urban flyover constructions. Citizens in Edo South have already expressed optimism after recent inspections of ongoing work, which include Evbuotubu Road, Okhunmwun Road, Upper Ekehuan Road, Adesuwa‑Sapele Road Flyover, Ramat Park Flyover and flood management structures in Benin City.

The Exco’s actions signal a push to not just expand the road network but to strengthen resilience against environmental challenges like flooding, and to integrate rural and urban hubs into a more cohesive economic ecosystem that improves the lives of Edo residents.
