The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has formally called on Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo to uphold Nigeria’s labour laws amid rising concerns about employment conditions and workers’ rights in the state. The labour union’s appeal comes as tensions linger over compliance with statutory obligations governing workplace standards, dispute resolution and collective bargaining across public and private sector workplaces.
Labour leaders admonished the state government to align its human resources and administrative policies with federal labour legislation, stressing that regulatory respect is necessary to preserve industrial harmony and protect workers’ welfare. They singled out provisions of the Labour Act they said should guide government conduct, including conditions of service, lawful termination processes, and mechanisms for resolving workplace disputes.
The NLC’s intervention reflects broader national conversations about the enforcement of labour standards, particularly as state governments balance economic pressures, investment attraction and workforce protections. The congress underscored that strict adherence to the legal framework provides clarity for employers and employees alike, and urged Edo State officials to lead by example in upholding workers’ rights.
Observers say the NLC’s appeal could catalyse renewed engagement between labour bodies and the government, fostering a climate where workers’ concerns are addressed proactively rather than reactively.
