Russian Missile Barrage Hits Kyiv, Leaves At Least 12 Dead

At least 12 people have been killed and dozens more injured after a wave of Russian missile and drone strikes hit Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and surrounding areas overnight.

The latest bombardment targeted several locations across the capital, damaging residential buildings, warehouses and other facilities as the Russia-Ukraine war enters its fifth year.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the attacks caused extensive damage in several parts of the city, with a medical facility and an educational institution among the sites affected.

According to authorities, 33 people were wounded in the capital as emergency teams continued rescue and recovery operations.

Deaths Reported Outside Kyiv

The attacks also affected the wider Kyiv region.

In Brovary district, one person was killed and another injured after a strike damaged an industrial facility, according to regional authorities. Firefighters and emergency personnel were deployed to contain a resulting blaze.

It was not immediately clear whether the reported death in Brovary was included in the capital’s official casualty figure.

Ukraine’s Air Force had earlier warned residents of incoming Russian missiles, including Kalibr cruise missiles detected in the Kyiv region.

NATO Countries Raise Alert

The overnight strikes also prompted heightened military activity among neighbouring NATO countries.

Poland said it deployed military aircraft and activated air-defence systems to protect its airspace, particularly areas close to the Ukrainian border.

Romania also reported detecting aerial targets near its border with Ukraine. Two Spanish fighter jets operating under NATO missions were scrambled alongside a Romanian military helicopter.

Romanian authorities later reported that a drone entered the country’s airspace near Galati before crashing in an unpopulated area in Tulcea.

Moscow Also Reports Ukrainian Drone Attack

While Ukraine suffered another major overnight assault, Russia said it came under a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said around 250 drones were detected heading towards the Moscow region between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

He said most were intercepted far from the Russian capital, while 28 drones were destroyed within the Moscow region.

The latest exchange highlights the growing intensity of long-range attacks by both sides, with Ukraine increasingly targeting Russian territory while Moscow continues its heavy missile and drone campaign against Ukrainian cities.

The escalation comes as international efforts to end the conflict continue, with Kyiv seeking to increase pressure on Moscow to return to meaningful negotiations.
