Former Anambra State Governor and ex-Labour Minister Chris Ngige has been arrested in Abuja by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), according to multiple reports.
The arrest occurred early Wednesday December 10th at Ngige’s residence on Justice Mohammed Bello Road. Initial public concern that Ngige had been kidnapped was dispelled when his media aide confirmed he was in EFCC custody as part of an ongoing investigation.
Although the anti-graft agency has not yet disclosed the charges against him, sources familiar with the matter indicate the probe involves alleged financial irregularities during his time in public office.
The arrest comes weeks after his convoy was attacked by armed men in Anambra State, an incident that left a woman dead and several civilians wounded. Security agencies are currently tightening investigations and media chatter continues as Nigerians await more details about the circumstances that led to his detention.
